The 5 Canadian sectors most affected by labour shortages

At a time when labor shortages continue to paralyze certain sectors, the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are still affecting companies struggling to recruit workers.

Many companies, both large and small, are reporting difficulties in recruiting staff, despite the fact that employers are often offering more and more incentives, including higher salaries, bonuses and flexible working hours.

According to StatCan, there are job vacancies in every province, with the biggest increases in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia. Overall, Deloitte Canada reports that 30.3% of Canadian companies report labour shortages. However, the statistics also show that the following five sectors have the highest number of vacancies in Canada:

HOTELS AND RESTAURANTS

As one of the sectors hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, Deloitte Canada predicts that the labor shortage facing the hospitality industry will not end any time soon.

HEALTH CARE

Although the pandemic has increased demand for healthcare services, many nurses report leaving the profession after the stress of COVID-19 made their work more difficult and less safe, creating a shortage of healthcare workers in some regions and even forcing rural areas to temporarily close hospital units. According to Statistics Canada, the healthcare and social assistance sector currently has the greatest need for workers of any sector in the country.

MANUFACTURING AND CONSTRUCTION

Statistics Canada has reported a record number of job vacancies in the manufacturing and construction industry, particularly in masonry, painting and electrical work. Carpenters, trades helpers and construction workers also account for a large proportion of the increase in vacancies.

RETAIL TRADE

According to StatCan, the greatest shortages in this sector were recorded in food and beverage stores, building materials merchants and garden equipment stores.

By occupation, the agency reported that retail salespeople, warehousemen, clerks and order fillers were among the 10 occupations whose vacancies increased the most.

TRUCK TRANSPORT

Trucking HR Canada, a national non-profit organization dedicated to solving workforce issues in the trucking and logistics sector, reports that there were nearly 20,000 vacancies in the trucking industry at the end of February 2022.

According to the organization, the impact of COVID-19 and the lack of foreign workers have contributed to the increase in vacancies. In addition, Trucking HR Canada has already noted that these factors have contributed to an increase in the number of older truckers retiring without enough new drivers to replace them.
